ITS ALL DOWN
TO CAT FOOD
In 1955, Christopher Cockerell put an empty KiteKat tin inside a coffee tin, balanced the tins on a pair of kitchen scales then got out his hair dryer…
NOT JUST HOT AIR
The idea was to build a vehicle that would move over the water's surface, floating on a thin layer of air. This would reduce friction between the water and vehicle and so increase speed.
Cockerell tested the hypothesis by blowing air into the tins on the scales. The downward thrust produced was greater when one tin was inside the other than when air was just blown
into one can. Essentially, the set up created lift. Local cats had been well fed and the basic physics behind the hovercraft was proved.
By 1956, Sir Christopher Cockerell had developed prototype hovercraft designs, which soon led to the first commercially produced hovercraft, the SRN1.
HOW HOVERWORLD CAME TO ADRENALIN QUARRY
The ethos behind Adrenalin Quarry has always been: keep it fun, fast and original. We had an unusual, dramatic location and were looking for attractions that would fit in to the amazing setting.
Right next door to us is Kartworld, which had a great reputation for bringing motorsport to the general public. We wanted to tap into that and push the boundaries even further.
DO NOT DISTURB
Hovercraft fitted the bill perfectly. They were a quirky British invention, they offered a genuinely unique experience for tourists and there was no provision for water flying anywhere in the South West. We also liked the fact that since the 1950s Hovercraft had traditionally been the preserve of techies, extremely rich people with loads of land and specialists from the Hovercraft Club of Great Britain, but we were making it completely accessible to locals, holidaymakers and families with older children.
We knew hovercraft would work in a wildlife haven like Clicker Quarry but we needed a machine that left even less wake to disturb the shoreline and nesting birds. The search began for smaller, lighter, quieter hovercraft, suitable for an enclosed environment. This led to trips around the country, hours of bleary-eyed internet trawling and much physical testing of various models, until finally we found our perfect model…
HELLO BIMO
The Hovery Bimo (pronounced bee-mo, not bye-mo) is completely different from a traditional hovercraft design (a boat with a skirt) in that its an aircraft frame on top of a skirt.
The result is a much lighter machine, which uses less fuel and delivers fun at manageable speeds. The brilliant Brazilian aerospace engineer Alberto Diecastelli designed the Hovery Bimo to fold up into a car and use quiet industrial engines, readily available around the world.
FLYING LOW
WITHOUT A LICENCE
We worked for three years with the manufacturers in a massive development program improving the design to meet the rigours of commercial use in the tourist industry. Now, Adrenalin Quarry is the No 1 venue in the UK for flight training in single-seat light hovercraft for the general public. No driving licence required.
