THE PAST, DONE FAST Adrenalin Quarry used to be called Clicker Quarry (locals still call it that). From 1932, when it was first worked for Blue Elvin rock, to 1969, when the last drill went silent, it was a hugely important business providing much-needed employment and a vital boost to South-East Cornwall’s economy. For decades the quarry lay derelict until in 1986, it got its first hit of adrenalin when Clicker Trikes, now Kartworld, opened its doors to the public. In their free time, managers and staff would organise outdoor parties at another derelict quarry (they had a thing for them) – Goldiggings on Bodmin Moor – where barbecues, cliff jumping, swimming and abseiling were always on the menu.
MAKING HISTORY,
ONE RIDE AT A TIME
One evening, just for a change, somebody put up a zip wire that plunged straight into the lake below. Just a knot, a pulley and screwed-up eyes. It proved the most popular attraction of the lot and soon became the focal point for future meets. A promise was made that one day they’d build a proper zip wire off the sheer cliffs at Clicker. 1ST, 1ST, 2ND (?), 1ST That was in 1989. 20 years later, the first posts went in for The UK’s Longest Zip Wire, while at the far end what was once a mound of hardcore was now a manicured grass arena for the UK’s first solo hovercraft school.
One year later still, after being shortlisted at the 2010 Cornwall Business Awards for Best New Business (congratulations to The Scarlet Hotel), Adrenalin Quarry pushed the boundaries of adrenalin sport once again. In May, Quarry Jumping opened, a freshwater coasteering adventure that featured yet another first: The UK’s Highest Supervised Jump – a staggering 20m (65ft). THERE’S ALWAYS MORE It’s been some ride getting here. But here is never enough. There is always the destination. What does that mean for 2011? Not telling. But it’ll be bigger, faster, better – and out there.
