Wild in the Woods at Adrenalin Quarry Cornwall part 1 (2017)

Wild in the woods
Wild in the woods started with a conversation with Joe Chandler, an instructor from the early days. He's moved up country, freelancing with a company in Wales. He said "they do this overnight deal where the stags and hens stay over in a campsite nearby; one of the directors has a friend who runs a catering company and they bring in food!" I thought that we could do better than that.

When I was a kid I used to play down by the river, hours at the time with my mates, brothers and sister, even my mum and dad used to come down for picnics. An artificial waterfall had been put in by a mineral lord from a bygone era, we never really figured out why. Maybe it was to make the river deeper and more tranquil for a stretch. Anyway there was a fallen tree over the river and the other side was our playground, just down the hill from Adrenalin Quarry

Our company did a deal with the landowner to put a steel frame across and lay concrete sections for a surface . Hey presto, instant access to a camping area plus the farmer can now get a tractor and trailer across to harvest wood. Result!

We had a really good look at the competition and found that there wasn't much and what there was seemed a bit military for our style. The point is to bring people together to make a magic night in their big weekend. How about if we put a real chef next to an open fire with a group of people with nothing better to do than to enjoy themselves? Big fire, big flavours, big portions. What's not to like?

We hung a parachute canopy from high up in the trees to make a central area for the groups. Not as easy as it sounds, we eventually bought a tree surgeon's catapult so we could get ropes over the high branches. Even learning to hang the canopy so it looks nice has been a mission. So where are all these beautiful people going to sleep? Much head scratching, Internet research, phone calls and discussion brought us to hammocks.

You can stay in a tent anywhere and glamping is old news. Why the hell would we want to do that? Hammocks! Yeah, Hammocks! Each one has its own tarpaulin right over it, everybody sleeps within bantering distance of each other! A beautiful thing about it is that to crash out no one has to leave the party. Just climb in your hammock and relax. A good nights sleep on top of a massive meal followed bye a beautiful breakfast cooked for you as you wake up, then off to the quarry for a day of mayhem.

We figured out that greeting people when they arrived, helping the group meet and get together would be important. The same in the morning, making sure that everybody was sorted and delivering them to their instructors with a proper handover would be good service and fun for our customers. We'll keep you posted.
